International Institute for Race, Equality and Human Rights

Our vision is a society of equality built on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, in which human rights are respected without any kind of discrimination. We believe that social change begins at the local level and is strengthened through alliances with people and organizations that share the same needs, values and experiences. Our work is guided by the principles of equality and diversity with the aim of achieving sustainable long-term structural changes. We are an international non-governmental organization for the defence and protection of human rights that works with counterparts and local activists in Latin America to promote and protect the human rights of marginalized populations, whether due to their racial or ethnic origin, sexual orientation or gender identity. Our methodology is based on technical training and the strengthening of grassroots organizations so that they become political actors and promote sustainable structural changes. We document and expose human rights violations, we promote political and legislative reforms at the national level, we use strategic litigation at the regional and international levels, and we do advocacy work to motivate the international community (United Nations, European Union and regional bodies), to take interest and react to critical human rights and discrimination issues in the countries where we work. Our headquarters are located in Washington D.C. and representation offices in Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Geneva (Switzerland) and Brussels (Belgium).
